One of Lexington's Best Family Rides
The Kentucky Horse Park isn't just a world-famous equestrian destination — it's also one of the best places in Lexington for a family cycling adventure. With miles of paved and mixed-surface trails winding through rolling hills, past horse pastures, and alongside some of the most iconic scenery in the Bluegrass, it's a perfect destination for cyclists of all ages.
Getting There and Parking
The Kentucky Horse Park is located at 4089 Iron Works Pike, about 20 minutes north of downtown Lexington. You can drive and park at the park, or — even better — ride the Legacy Trail from downtown, which ends right at the Horse Park. This turns your visit into a 24-mile round-trip adventure.
Parking at the Horse Park is free for trail users. If you want to visit the park's museums and shows, there's an admission fee, but the trails themselves are free to use.
Trail Options for Families
The park offers several trail options. The main loop is approximately 8 miles of mixed surface trails that wind through the park's most scenic areas. For families with younger children, there are shorter loops and paved paths that stay close to the main facilities.
Along the way, you'll pass horse pastures with grazing thoroughbreds, historic barns, and scenic overlooks. The trails are well-marked and maintained, with plenty of places to stop for photos, snacks, or just to enjoy the view.
Tips for Families
Bring plenty of water and snacks, as the park is large and you can easily spend several hours riding. Restrooms and water fountains are available at the main facilities. The park can be busy on weekends, so consider visiting on a weekday for a more peaceful experience.
If you're riding with young children, stick to the paved paths near the entrance. For older kids and more confident riders, the full loop offers a fun adventure with rolling hills and varied terrain. Don't forget helmets for everyone in the family!
