The Most Dramatic Scenery in the Bluegrass
If you want to experience the most breathtaking scenery the Bluegrass Region has to offer, the Kentucky River Palisades should be at the top of your list. These towering limestone cliffs, some rising 400 feet above the river, create a landscape unlike anything else in Kentucky — and the trails along the bluff edge offer some of the most rewarding cycling in the region.
Where to Ride
The Palisades trail system is accessible from several points, with the main access at Raven Run Nature Sanctuary in southeast Fayette County. From there, a network of natural surface trails follows the bluff edge, offering stunning overlooks of the Kentucky River below.
For a more challenging ride, connect the Palisades trails with the gravel roads that run through the river bottom. This creates a loop of 15-20 miles with a mix of dirt trails, gravel roads, and scenic overlooks. The terrain is rugged and challenging — best suited for experienced mountain bikers or gravel riders with appropriate tires.
What to Expect
The trails along the Palisades are natural surface — dirt, gravel, and rock. They can be muddy after rain, so check conditions before heading out. The bluff-edge trails have significant exposure in some sections, so ride carefully and stay on the trail. The overlooks are the highlight — bring a camera and plan to stop frequently.
Wildlife is abundant along the Palisades, including bald eagles, herons, and diverse songbirds. In spring, the wildflower display along the bluff trails is spectacular. The area is also rich in history — the Palisades were a significant landmark for early Kentucky settlers and Native Americans before them.
Safety and Preparation
This is a remote, rugged area. Carry plenty of water, a first aid kit, and extra tubes. Cell service can be spotty along the river. Ride with a partner if possible, and let someone know your planned route. The Palisades trails are best ridden in fall, winter, and spring when the foliage is less dense and the views are clearer.
