A Natural Escape Close to the City
Tucked away in southeast Lexington, Raven Run Nature Sanctuary is one of the Bluegrass Region's best-kept cycling secrets. This 374-acre preserve offers a network of natural surface trails through forest, meadow, and along the stunning Kentucky River Palisades. For mountain bikers and nature-loving cyclists, it's a must-ride destination.
Unlike Lexington's paved trails, Raven Run offers a more rugged, natural experience. The dirt trails wind through dense forest, cross creeks, and lead to breathtaking overlooks of the Kentucky River. It's the kind of place where you can ride for an hour and forget you're anywhere near a city.
What to Expect on the Trails
Raven Run's trail system includes several loops of varying lengths and difficulties. The trails are natural surface — dirt and gravel — so a mountain bike or gravel bike is recommended. The terrain ranges from easy, flat sections to moderate climbs and descents, with some technical features near the river overlooks.
The sanctuary is home to diverse wildlife including deer, wild turkeys, and over 200 species of birds. In spring and summer, the wildflower displays are spectacular. The trails are well-marked, and a nature center at the entrance provides maps and information about the area's ecology and history.
Planning Your Ride
Raven Run is located at 3885 Raven Run Way, Lexington, KY. Parking is free and there's no admission fee. The sanctuary is open daily from dawn to dusk. Note that trails may be closed after heavy rain due to muddy conditions — check the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government website for current trail status.
Bring plenty of water, as there are no water fountains on the trails. A mountain bike with at least 2-inch wide tires is recommended. Be prepared to share the trails with hikers and trail runners — Raven Run is a multi-use facility, so be courteous and yield appropriately.
